댄 브라운의 “The Lost Symbol”을 다 -읽었- 들었습니다. 다빈치 코드를 다 읽고 난 다음에, 그가 쓴 책을 모조리 찾아 읽었었댔죠. 다빈치 코드를 읽으면서 느꼈던 생각이 이번에는 더 확고해졌습니다. 다른 책과 달리 다빈치 코드가 특히 빛을 발한(베스트셀러가 된) 데에는 제가 보기에는 몇 가지 이유가 있는데요…
뛰어난 작가는 글을 잘 쓰는 기술이 꼭 있어야겠지만, 이에 더해서 그만이 제공할 수 있는 핵심적인 비밀이 있습니다. 댄 브라운이 성공한 것은 글솜씨 못지 않게 그의 최고의 투어 가이드로서의 기술이 크게 기여했다는 것입니다. 다빈치 코드를 다 읽고, 요즘 나오는 사진까지 곁들인 책을 읽고 나면 마치 프랑스의 구석구석과 프랑스의 문명사의 한 조각과 역사의 일부를 훔쳐본 듯한, 그것도 제대로 훔쳐본 듯한 느낌이 들죠.
댄 브라운도 그걸 아는 것 같아요. 이번엔 워싱턴 DC입니다. 저로서는 특별한 의미가 있는 곳이죠.
